Chapter Update (February 2007):
We are planning our next meeting of the Big Bend Chapter of A&WMA with a tour of the FSU MagLab at Innovation Park in Tallahassee. The tentative date is sometime in February. The only facility of its kind in the United States, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (less formally known as the Magnet Lab) is the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world. Established by the National Science Foundation in 1990, the lab is a national resource open to both curious visitors and world-renowned scientists. Every year, more than 900 visiting scientists and engineers from across the world conduct experiments using this state-of-the-art equipment. These magnets produce tremendous magnetic fields, prized by researchers who use them to study a wide range of materials and processes. What happens in experiments under such conditions give scientists important insights that pave the way for advances in physics, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry, materials science and engineering. We hope this event will attract Chapter members.
We have not had elections yet so the current officers remain in office. The Chapter received a commemorative banner marking 100 years of the international A&WMA organization. It will be displayed at our next function. The Chapter is glad to see 13 individuals as international A&WMA members.
